Physical modeling

Physical modeling synthesis tries to recreate real-world instruments by simulating their physical properties. For instance: using waveguides to simulate the airflow in a flute. Or spring-mass networks to simulate resonance inside hi-hat dishes.

Physical modeling in [BLOK]

[BLOK] has several special blocks to facilitate the reconstruction of a physical model:

  • Delay - delay with feedback provides the basic resonant chamber/waveguide.
  • Tracked Delay - tracked delay provides a waveguide tuned relative to the current note. (like a flute-pipe)
  • Filter Delay - filterdelay has a filter in the feedback stage which can be used to simulate a string-type waveguide that slowly alters timbre over time

Hardware using physical modeling

Famous hardware physical modeling synthesizers are:

  • Yamaha VL-1/VL-70m
  • Clavia Nord Modular has an excellent selection of physical models
